The Q&A
session for "Suffragettte" with the screenwriter Abi Morgan and
actress Romola Garai, has given us insight into the production process as well
as their thoughts on the film.
As part of the
pre production process Abi Morgan had to research all the historical detail
about the Suffragette movement in order to make the movie more accurate and
realistic. We could see her research in movie as the setting, props, costumes
and characters all reflected the time period this movie is set in. Suffragette
was in fact the first movie that was allowed to be filmed in the British Houses
of Parliament which is where the original suffragettes gave testimony in order
to secure the right to vote. I think that Morgan's research has definitely helped
to create a high level for verisimilitude.
However the movie
isn't historical accurate in every way. Abi Morgan was asked why there was a
lack of diversity in the movie to which she replied that although she carried
out extensive research into the Suffragette movement, she couldn't find enough
evidence. Morgan also mentioned that it was impossible to include all of the
details about the movement without making the movie too complicated and within
such a short time. She also mentioned that the script has been drafted around 30-40
times before the final script was created which shows how long and time
consuming the pre production process is. I found out that script was originally
written from Alice's
point of view however they soon realised that this wouldn't work out and the
script had to be re written from Maud's point of view.
Romola Garai
talked about how honoured she was to be involved in such a movie because she
very passionate about women's rights. She mentioned how during filming one of
the scenes in which they were throwing rocks, the director had to tell her to
act a bit less violent because was so passionate.
